Give Your Fax Machine the Heave-Ho on BNET

BNET followed up on the Web Worker Daily story and so I decided to add a bit more to the conversation at BNET.  First the opinion from Business Hacks Blog at BNET(love the design on this site by the way):

For the most part, I agree. I never send a fax when an e-mail will do. For documents that require my signature, I paste in a digitized version (as David wisely suggested yesterday). I don’t have to devote a phone line to a fax machine because I now receive faxes via e-mail

My comments, which I believe are very relevant to any discussion on the future of faxing, are next:

I agree the fax machine can go for the most part for a lot of people that do have email and do have a scanner, but there are a huge number of folks that do no have those, or “cannot get the damn scanner to work” and still need the machine. That said, having come from the Internet Fax industry, I know that that is the ideal solution, especially when corporations can integrate fax services into their network.

The Internet Fax market is booming and likely will be for a long time to come as hundreds of thousands of IT departments replace fax servers that are difficult and time consuming to manage with Internet fax services that are self-managing and powerful and there is never a busy signal.

You have to be careful, because you are relying upon the network of another company for your mission critical faxes, but the fact is it is less costly for at least 2-3 years and less hassle forever. Major banks, health care providers, insurance companies, secure government installations and much more rely on faxes for revenue, profit, and national security. Its not going anywhere as a method of communication for a long time to come.
