Can’t decide if he means Internet Fax or just letting others manage your fax server infrastructure, but either way fax is definitely something that IT should look to outsourcing to for a solution. It is cost-effective, more powerful, and more flexible.
Update: This piece was written by Simon Bushell at Premiere Global Services, so he is likely trying to make a point about Internet Fax, but he seems ill prepared to make the argument. The interesting thing is he is definitely not an unbiased source, but this the masthead for the site:

Hmmmm… what’s wrong with this picture?
A good example of smart use of outsourcing is the fax server, although a small process within IT, in industries such as the financial sector it is a business critical process. With hundreds of thousands of trading confirmations being faxed daily and with highly unpredictable levels of transaction activity, the fax server needs to have a flexible capacity to adapt to dramatic business growth and other unexpected events. As if dealing with such high and changing capacities was not enough, IT departments also have to ensure that they abide by specific industry regulations that require trading confirmations to be sent within a specific timeframe to avoid fines. Needless to say, this simple process alone takes up valuable time from IT that could be allocated elsewhere.
To make a decision of how to manage a process like the fax server, IT directors should determine how critical the process is for the business and what specialist attention it requires. In this way, they can allocate it appropriately to maximise capacity, efficiency, performance, and of course, their budgets.
